When are You Visiting the Sahara Desert in Morocco?

The time of year you visit the Sahara Desert greatly influences the clothing and accessories you’ll need to bring. Morocco experiences distinct seasons, each offering its own charm and challenges.

Spring and Fall

These shoulder seasons, from March to May and September to November, offer pleasant temperatures for exploring the desert. During these months, lightweight, breathable clothing is key. Opt for long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect against the sun and sand. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses will shield you from the intense sunlight. Layering with a lightweight jacket or sweater is advisable for cooler evenings.

Our blog What it’s Like to Spend the Night in the Sahara Desert offers even more insight into what you can expect in our camps after sunset.

Summer

From June to August, our part of the Sahara experiences scorching temperatures, often exceeding 100°F (38°C). Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen is essential. Choose light colors to reflect the sunlight as they will help to keep you cooler. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen with a high SPF, a hat with a wide brim, and sunglasses.

Winter

December to February brings cooler temperatures to the desert, with daytime highs ranging from 50°F to 70°F (10°C to 21°C). While the days are mild, nights can be chilly, with temperatures dropping to around 40°F (4°C). Layering is key during this season. Pack a mix of lightweight and warmer clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, pants, a jacket or sweater, and a scarf and hat for added warmth.

What Activities Will You Enjoy in the Sahara Desert?

When you visit our luxury desert camps at Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga, we offer a range of exciting experiences that fully immerse you in the beauty and wonder of the Sahara Desert. Ultimately, the activities you join will influence what clothes you need to pack. For example, someone whose priority is to relax and disconnect from the world will have different needs to a thrill-seeker looking to explore the desert in as many ways as possible.

We’ve covered three of our most popular Sahara Desert activities below to help you put together your packing list.

Camel Riding

Embarking on a traditional camel trek across the mesmerizing dunes of Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga is an absolute must-do for most of our guests. For this activity, wear comfortable, lightweight clothing that allows for ease of movement. Closed-toe shoes are recommended to protect your feet from the hot sand — and because they stay on your feet! For the same reason, you should not wear flip-flops.

Sandboarding

You can experience the thrill of gliding down the golden dunes on a sandboard at our luxury camps in Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga. For this exhilarating activity, wear athletic clothing that allows for flexibility, comfort, and movement. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with ankle straps are ideal for stability on the board.

Swimming in a Tented Pool

Who would have thought you could cool off from the desert heat in the refreshing waters of a tented swimming pool? Well, at our Erg Chebbi luxury camp, you can do exactly this! Of course, to make the most of this incredible facility, you will need to pack your swimsuit!

Essential Packing List for Visiting the Sahara Desert in Morocco

So, now we’ve laid the foundations for your trip to one of our luxury desert camps in Morocco, it’s time to look at some essential items for your packing list. Of course, there’s no one-size-fits-all list that works for every traveler, but the items below are the basics that you should consider bringing.

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing: Long-sleeved shirts, pants, skirts, and dresses.
  • Wide-brimmed hat: Protect your face, head, and neck from the sun with one item.
  • Sunglasses with UV protection: Keep your eyes fresh and safe against the desert sun.
  • High SPF Sunscreen: The higher the SPF, the better — and bring enough to re-apply!
  • Scarf or Bandana: For added protection against the sun and the occasional sandstorm.
  • Closed-toe Shoes: Perfect for desert walks, sandboarding, and camel trekking.
  • Moisture-wicking Socks: Bring more pairs than you think you will need!
  • Lightweight Jacket or Sweater: Layer up for the cooler evenings, especially in winter.
  • Sandboarding Attire: bring sturdy footwear and athletic clothing for ease of movement.
  • Camera: If you’re a photography enthusiast, the desert provides endless photo opportunities.
  • Water Bottle: We provide water at our camps, but having your own bottle will ensure you stay hydrated.
