Top Things To Do in Merzouga, Morocco

Located on the eastern edge of Morocco, the small town of Merzouga is a gateway to the incredible dunes of Erg Chebbi. Traveling to Merzouga will offer you one of the most authentic Moroccan experiences, with the opportunity to connect with locals amid the Sahara Desert.

At Desert Luxury Camp, we know Merzouga like the back of our hand. Members of our team have grown up near Erg Chebbi and now specialize in operating Luxury Desert Camps in Morocco.

We’ve put together a blog of the top things to do in Merzouga, Morocco. Add these to your bucket list, or feel free to contact us about staying at one of our desert camps.

Ride a Camel through the Merzouga Desert

Travel like a true nomad by riding a camel through the Merzouga Desert. These ships of the desert have historically been used for transport in Morocco and the Sahara. Camels still play an essential role in nomadic life, and you can experience riding one for yourself!

Go on a leisurely trek through the sands on top of your new dromedary friend, moving as part of a camel train. This is one of the most immersive ways of experiencing Merzouga, giving you an unparalleled view of the landscape. Opt to ride at sunset for the best possible photo opportunities!

If you’re looking for more ideas on what you can do in the Sahara, read our blog on 10 Things to Do in the Sahara Desert Beyond a Camel Ride.

Go on a 4×4 Safari through Erg Chebbi

If you’d prefer to move at a faster pace, a 4×4 safari is the way to go. The best way to tackle the dunes of Erg Chebbi is to use a jeep, allowing you to cross tricky terrain and cover further distances (with air conditioning!).

On a 4×4 safari, you can reach locations you might not otherwise visit. Head towards the Merzouga Lake, which abounds with flamingos and other birds when the waters are full. In Mifis, you’ll find a fascinating abandoned mining town where they used to excavate kohl and quartz. Continue driving to encounter remote Berber villages, where you can stop for a cup of mint tea and learn more about the local way of life.

If you want to expand your appreciation for the resilient 4×4, you could even visit the Moroccan National 4×4 Auto Museum in Merzouga. Discover the wide range of vehicles that have been used since the 1900s to cross the desert. Learn fun facts about each car and the role they have played – including transporting the Moroccan king!

Take a Trip to Khamlia

The village of Khamlia is just a 10-minute drive from Merzouga and will introduce you to the incredible legacy of Gnawa music. Gnawa people were originally brought to Morocco as slaves and developed their unique trance-like musical style around religious and spiritual rituals.

In Khamlia, you can meet a group of Gnawa musicians and listen to their intricate songs, played on traditional instruments like the guembri. For a comprehensive cultural experience, you can even arrange to travel to Merzouga during the Khamlia Gnawa Festival, which takes place over three days and nights during the summer.

Dine on Traditional Moroccan Food

The town of Merzouga is bustling with cafes and restaurants where you can dine on traditional Moroccan dishes. Stop at Cafe Restaurant Moreno for tea and pastries or savor a variety of Moroccan soups. At Restaurant Jordi & Naima, you can have classic hamburgers with fries, washed down with a cool, refreshing drink.

For the best medfouna, or Berber pizza, head to Cafe Restaurant Chez Youssef. Sandwiches, Berber omeletes, and tajines are also on the menu, all made with the freshest ingredients. At Cafe Restaurant Tenere, find the best views in town from their rooftop overlooking the dunes.

Take an ATV through the Merzouga Dunes

For a real adrenaline rush, go on a thrilling ATV ride through the dunes. Travel at speed and watch as your quad bike kicks up the golden sands. This is a great activity for groups of friends or families, as you can challenge yourselves to tackle the dunes and race each other!

You certainly don’t have to go speeding if you don’t want to. Take a more relaxing ride at sunrise or sunset to soak up the atmosphere. Going slower also allows you to keep an eye out for any desert animals and admire the scenery. Make sure to wear a scarf over your mouth and nose as it’s sure to get dusty!

Stargaze at the Erg Chebbi Luxury Desert Camp

What better place to stargaze than in the middle of the desert? With nothing but dunes and a few camps around, the stars come out to shine over Erg Chebbi. See the Milky Way from the comfort of our Erg Chebbi Luxury Desert Camp, primely located for observing the cosmos.

After enjoying dinner around the campfire, accompanied by live traditional music, you can turn your eyes to the night sky. At an additional cost, we can invite a professor to the camp who will lead a lecture on stargazing and bring a 200mm telescope for viewing the planets up close. This is an awe-inspiring experience that will leave you astounded!
