This Morocco desert camping tour is accessible to everyone and has no minimum age. However, please consider the driving distances for elderly people and small children.
You do not need any special equipment. If you are traveling in summer, we strongly recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. When riding camels, longer pants are preferred over shorts and skirts, and light sports shoes are better than sandals as they may slip off.
Remember, winter nights in the desert are cold! We always recommend bringing warm jackets, layers, and even hats. What’s more, sand gets everywhere, so if you have some expensive equipment, store it in a zip-lock bag to keep it safe.

Your driver will collect you in the morning from your riad or hotel in Fes. Our vehicle has air conditioning, so you will be comfortable on the long yet beautiful drive to Merzouga, Southern Morocco. We will stop in the town of Ifrane which is often referred to as the “Moroccan Switzerland” due to its houses with sloping roofs. These are not typical in Morocco.
Further along the route, in Azrou, we will stop to say hello to the Barbary apes. Later, we reach Midelt, where we may stop for lunch. This whole area is well known for apple trees. Then it’s back to the car! We continue driving south, arriving at the Errachidia province and the Ziz Valley, known for its date palm trees. The most expensive and biggest Medjoul dates come mainly from this area. If there is time and you are interested, we can also stop at the Fossil Museum.
Later in the day, we reach Rissani and pass the famous gate to the desert dunes of Erg Chebbi by Merzouga. Here we travel into the desert in our 4WD vehicle to reach the camp for the night.
Settle in and enjoy dinner under the African sky, the warm campfire, and traditional drum music.
We always recommend spending two nights in the desert, and this second day is the perfect example of why. It is a long journey one takes to the Sahara and coming for one night only doesn’t give you enough time to see and do everything on offer.
When you spend two nights in our Erg Chebbi luxury desert camp, you have a full day to immerse yourself in the desert activities and appreciate the beauty of the dunes! Of course, you also have a second night to truly appreciate a Saharan sunset and the magical night ambiance.
Day three comes with an early morning departure from our Erg Chebbi camp for the long journey to Marrakech. At first, we travel the straight road through the volcanic mountains, taking us to the Draa Valley. This is the longest and most beautiful oasis in Morocco and it is dotted by millions of palm trees and Biblical-like villages. We will make a stop in one of the towns for our picnic lunch.
The valley eventually disappears and the barren gorges lead our way to Ouarzazate. We pass this city but will make a stop in the nearby Ksar of Ait Benhaddou, the most famous Ksar/Kasbah in all of Morocco. Finally, we cross the High Atlas Mountains and continue through to Marrakech.
Tip: Remember, you can complete this trip in reverse, starting in Marrakech and ending in Fes.
