This is one of the classic desert tours that has only one long day drive on the way back to Marrakech. We like this tour for its well paced travel. You’ll have a chance to admire the peaks of the High Atlas, visit UNESCO protected Ksar of Ait BenHaddou and ancient Pasha residents of Telouet, walk in the UNESCO BIO protected palm grove forest of the Draa Valley. Stay in some unforgettable locations from restored ancient Kasbah or private luxury villas inside the palm groves and of course in the canvas tents amidst the desert peaks.

    Useful Information

This is a great tour for everyone, please just bear in mind the long distance last day.

This tour is accessible to all with no minimum age – though consider the driving distances for elderly and small children.

No special equipment needed. Though if you are traveling in summer please bring a hat, sunscreen lotion and sun glasses. For riding camels, longer pants are preferred than shorts/skirts and possibly light sport shoes/tennis rather than sandals that can slip.

Winter nights are cold! So warm jackets and even hats are great addition.

Remember sand gets everywhere so if you have some expensive equipment zip lock bags is to keep it safe from sand grains getting on it.

    Itinerary of the trip

Day 1Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Telouet – Ait BenHaddou – Ouarzazate – Agdz – Draa Valley

Your driver will collect you from your hotel or riad in Marrakech.  Start your drive through the dramatic road across the High Atlas of  Tizi n’Tichka pass.  We have an opportunity to visit to the best Kasbah in the area (Glaoui Kasbah and Ait Benhaddou Ksar).  Then descend into Ouarzazate that we pass and continue along barren gorges to Agdz. Here we descend into the longest and most impressive river valley of Draa.  Night in the oasis of the Draa Valley.

Day 2Draa Valley – Nekob – Alnif – Merzouga and Erg Chebbi Dunes

Today’s drive will take us along the valley that will be gone and then peaks of volcanic mountains of Sahro will lead our way to the desert.  We will pass some small typical towns such as Nekob and Alnif eventually arriving to the Sahara gateway arch in Rissani.  Later we start seeing the desert dunes from the road. Here arrive to the camp , settle in and then enjoy memorable camel trek during the sundown.

Dinner and campfire will follow after sunset.

Day 3Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Boumlane Dades – Ouarzazate – High Atlas – Marrakech

Rise early before the sunrise to view the color changing of the desert dunes as the sun rises. Then breakfast and early departure to Marrakech.  This will be a long day drive. We travel towards Erfourd and further to Tinerhir. Here we take a small detour to visit Todra Gorge.  Then return on the main route and continue your travel to Boumalne Dades and Ouarzazate eventually meeting the High Atlas Mountains back to Marrakech. Late afternoon arrival around 6 to 7  pm

Option: Instead of return back to Marrakech you can travel to Fes, the last day drive will be shorter
